Manaslu Circuit Trek: Complete Guide to Nepal's Remote Himalayan Journey

Plan the Manaslu Circuit with route, Larkya La, current restricted-area permits, seasons, teahouses, difficulty and realistic itinerary advice.

Manaslu is often described as “the quieter Annapurna Circuit.” That comparison is useful only up to a point.

Both are circuit-style treks with a major high pass and a transition from lower valleys to trans-Himalayan terrain. But Manaslu is more tightly controlled, more remote in feel and more dependent on correct restricted-area permit arrangements.

Nepal Tourism Board describes the route as following an ancient trail along the Budhi Gandaki corridor, with culture, villages and Himalayan landscapes leading toward the high country around Manaslu. The Department of Immigration classifies parts of Gorkha/Manaslu as restricted trekking areas and publishes seasonal permit fees.

This makes Manaslu an excellent choice for travellers who want a structured, guided high-Himalayan trek and do not mind more logistics.

Travel snapshot

Best for: experienced trekkers, small groups, travellers prioritizing remoteness Typical duration: ~12–18+ days High point: Larkya La, generally cited around 5,100 m+ Best official season: March–May and September–November Accommodation: lodges/teahouses; camping remains possible Permit type: restricted-area permit + conservation-area requirements; current details must be verified Main challenge: altitude, pass day, remoteness, permit logistics

The route in practical terms

A typical journey progresses from lower Gorkha river valleys toward increasingly Tibetan-influenced settlements before crossing Larkya La and descending toward the Annapurna-side road network.

A common structure may include:

  • lower Budhi Gandaki villages;
  • Jagat/Deng area;
  • Namrung/Lho;
  • Samagaon;
  • acclimatization day;
  • Samdo;
  • Dharamsala/Larkya Phedi area;
  • Larkya La crossing;
  • Bimthang;
  • descent toward Dharapani/Besisahar connection.

Exact trailheads and vehicle endpoints change as roads develop.

Why Samagaon deserves time

Samagaon is a natural acclimatization hub and cultural highlight. A day here can be used for a higher walk depending on conditions, while returning to sleep lower.

Trying to save one day by removing acclimatization is false economy on a route that eventually crosses a 5,000 m-class pass.

Larkya La

The pass day is long, cold and weather-sensitive. The route is trekking rather than technical climbing in normal conditions, but snow can materially change difficulty.

Preparation should include:

  • early start;
  • warm layers/gloves;
  • reliable footwear;
  • headlamp;
  • water/food strategy;
  • slow pace;
  • guide assessment of trail and weather.

Do not publish a guaranteed crossing time because snow, group pace and starting camp vary.

Restricted-area permits

This is where Manaslu differs sharply from standard open trekking areas.

The Department of Immigration publishes seasonal restricted-area fees for the Gorkha Manaslu area. Current official information lists higher permit rates in September–November than in December–August. Restricted-area permits are processed through authorized trekking agencies; immigration guidance states that individual permits are not issued directly for these restricted areas and solo trekking in them is not permitted.

Because rules change, the package page should display:

  • “permit fees verified on [date]”;
  • what is included;
  • whether conservation-area/TIMS/other fees are included;
  • current group/guide requirements.

Never copy a permit price from an old blog into a 2027 departure page.

Best time to trek Manaslu

NTB lists March–May and September–November.

Spring

Warmer lower valleys, mountain conditions improving after winter, busy but generally less concentrated than Everest.

Autumn

Strong visibility and trail conditions; October can be the busiest period.

Winter

High-pass snow/cold can make the route significantly more difficult.

Monsoon

Heavy rain affects lower approaches and road/trail conditions. Landslides are a serious planning consideration.

Difficulty

Manaslu is strenuous because of:

  • long duration;
  • cumulative ascent;
  • remote terrain;
  • high sleeping altitudes;
  • Larkya La;
  • fewer easy exit options than mainstream routes.

Previous multi-day trekking experience is useful. First-time Himalayan trekkers can succeed with proper preparation, but this is not the route to choose simply because EBC looks crowded.

Accommodation

NTB notes both lodges and camping in the conservation area. Teahouse infrastructure has developed substantially along the main circuit, but comfort varies.

Travellers should expect:

  • basic twin rooms;
  • simple heating arrangements;
  • limited charging/hot water higher up;
  • menus shaped by supply access.

Safety and insurance

Insurance should explicitly cover the trek’s planned altitude and emergency evacuation where applicable. Weather can isolate high sections, and access to advanced medical care is limited.

Altitude principles are the same as elsewhere: ascend gradually, recognize symptoms, do not push higher while unwell and descend when necessary.

Responsible travel

Manaslu’s relative remoteness is part of its appeal. Help keep it that way:

  • use refillable water/treatment systems;
  • avoid single-use plastic where practical;
  • support locally run lodges;
  • respect monastery and village photography etiquette;
  • keep group size appropriate;
  • follow waste-management guidance.

Common mistakes travellers make

  • Booking before checking current permit rules.
  • Treating Manaslu as an “uncrowded EBC substitute.”
  • Cutting the Samagaon acclimatization day.
  • Assuming Larkya La is easy because it is non-technical.
  • Buying insurance with an altitude exclusion.
  • Scheduling a tight international departure after the trek.

Who should choose Manaslu?

Choose it if you want:

  • a more remote-feeling circuit;
  • a guided/restricted-area trek;
  • cultural transition and high Himalayan terrain;
  • a major pass without the Annapurna Circuit’s heavier road influence.

Choose Annapurna or Langtang if you want simpler logistics or more route flexibility.
